MSC Cruises Youth Programs

MSC Poesia In Curacao

MSC offers organized programs for children 3-17 years old.  This cruise line caters more towards Europeans than other cruise lines, and there will most likely be children from Europe on the Caribbean cruises.  There could be a language barrier between children, but our children still had a great time!  The youth staff all speak English, and I believe they were all Italian on the MSC Poesia.

Mini-Club (ages 3-8 years old) and Junior Club (ages 9-12 years old)

Activities could include:

  • arts and crafts
  • swimming
  • sports tournaments
  • treasure hunts
  • parties
  • live shows
  • talent contests
  • onboard adventures
  • Virtual World Arcade
  • trivia
  • chess
  • dance contests

On the MSC Poesia, the ship that cruises in North America, there were two children’s rooms.  One was geared toward younger children and had a dinosaur theme.  The other one was for the older kids, but the two age groups were often combined here to watch movies or play Wii.   During sea days children are not watched all day as we have experienced on Norwegian Cruise Line.  There were required times you needed to sign out your children, usually around meal time.

The children earned Doremi Dollars for attending the programs.  On the last night they used them towards small prizes that they got to take home.  The children often spent time in the S32 Disco next to the Kids Club room learning a dance routine.

Doremi Dining is offered at least once where the children are fed by the youth staff.  Parents must pre-register at the Kids Club by 10am on the day of the Doremi Dining.

Teens (ages 13-17):

Activities could include:

  • MTV-style dance classes in hip-hop and Latin-style
  • Virtual World Arcade
  • teen trivia
  • dance contests
  • live music and dancing
  • treasure hunts
  • swimming games
  • talent shows
  • karaoke
  • volleyball
  • basketball
  • football
  • tennis
  • table-tennis tournaments

Holland America Youth Programs

Holland America, while not usually thought to be a family cruise line, does have youth programs for children 3 -17 years old except for the ms Prinsendam where youth activities are offered for ages 5-17.  All program hours are based on number of children on board, age group, and staffing.  For both sea and port days, activities are available morning, afternoon, and evening.  Club HAL does offer activities for children aged 3-12 from 8:00am – 4:00pm on port days.

Club HAL Kids — (ages 3-7) participate in such activities as story telling, fabric painting, indoor games, arts and crafts, drawing contests, ice-cream sundae parties, puzzles, bingo, pirate treasure hunts or a farewell pizza party. Children in the Kid’s age group must be toilet trained (no pull-ups or diapers).

Club HAL Tweens – (ages 8-12) might learn golf putting, have disco parties and theme parties, participate in the National Park Service Jr. Ranger Program on Alaska cruises, compete in on-deck sports events, compete in scavenger hunts or simply play Ping-Pong with a friend.

The Loft and The Oasis for Teens - (ages 13-17) enjoy the teen disco, karaoke sessions, video games, teen sports tournaments, card games, trivia contests, bingo, movies and videos. When there are more than 100 children on board, a HAL Talent Show is offered. (The Oasis is not available on all Vista-class ships)

Babysitting:

After Hours group kid sitting is offered every evening from 10:00 pm to 12:00 am. Children must be 3 years of age and potty trained. Charge is $5.00 hour per child. Late charges apply to children who are picked up after 12:00 am. Limited private babysitting is available for all ages through the front office. Youth staff are not able to provide this service.

Kids & Teens Culinary Arts Center Program

Kids will learn basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, new ingredients and how to follow recipe instructions.  Kids will learn about numbers and measuring, cleanliness, safety and time management via this hands-on program.  Two age groups: 3-7 years old and 8+years old. Teenagers 15 years + may participate in the adult classes.

  • The menus range from simple to teen gourmet
  • Classes are usually limited to fifteen students unless otherwise noted
  • All classes are hands-on
  • Each student receives copies of the recipes prepared in class
  • All classes are complimentary and last approximately one hour

Finally, I wanted to mention that Holland America has been having specials on Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, and Alaskan cruises where the 3rd/4th guests are free!  I will try to gather a list soon of cruises that offer this.  The base prices for the 1st and 2nd passengers might be higher than other cruise lines, so the total price could actually be higher than other comparable cruises.
